Tooth Decay

Tooth enamel is the hard outer layer of the teeth which is responsible for its protection.
A poor oral hygiene can lead to accumulation of bacteria & formation of sticky acidic film of plaque on the teeth. This plaque corrodes the tooth enamel & results in cavities. This condition is referred to as tooth decay.


Food groups to consume in tooth decay:

1.Calcium: Essential for formation of bones & teeth and
counteract the effect of plaque

Foods to consume: Milk, yogurt, cottage cheese (paneer), spinach, finger millet (ragi), sesame seeds and pulses such as chickpeas, green gram (moong) and kidney beans

2. Fiber & alkaline rich foods: Help neutralize acid attack on teeth

Foods to consume: Apples, pears, papaya, melons, bananas, carrots, cucumbers, cabbage and bell peppers


Recipes based on the above food groups:

Recipe 1: Fruit yogurt

1. Chop 1 apple in a bowl
2. Add 1 sliced banana in it
3. Now, add 8 small chopped strawberries
4. Finally, add 100 gm of yogurt to these fruits
5. Mix all the ingredients well
6. Serve this chilled

This makes a great dish for a nice mid meal snack

Recipe 2: Chickpeas topped cucumber

1. Soak ¼ cup chickpeas over night
2. Pressure cook soaked chickpeas for 10-15 min until 3-4
3. Cut 5 thick slices of cucumber
4. Now, in a blender, add boiled chickpeas
5. Also add 1 clove of garlic
6. Then, add 1 tsp olive oil and ½ tsp lemon juice in it
7. Now, add salt and pepper for taste
8. Blend them all together in a smooth paste
9. Now, take a spoonful of this mixture and place it on each of the
cucumber slices
10. Arrange these slices in a plate and garnish them with coriander
